New Monsoon, a rock jam band from San Francisco, California, was founded in 1998 by Penn State classmates Bo Carper and Jeff Miller. The group's initial lineup included Phil "The Pianimal" Ferlino on keyboards, who joined after contributing to their first album, Hydrophonic. New Monsoon gained traction through extensive touring, sharing the stage with notable acts such as The String Cheese Incident and Umphrey's McGee. Their diverse musical influences ranged from jazz to Indian music, resulting in a unique blend of genres including rock 'n' roll, bluegrass, reggae, and funk. The band released several albums, including Downstream (2003), The Sound (2005), and V (2007). They also performed at major festivals like Bonnaroo and the Austin City Limits Festival. In 2004, New Monsoon was awarded Emerging Artist of the Year by Jambase.com. Their live performances were known for featuring special guests such as Martin Fierro and Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth.
