Biography

Antônio Gonçalves Sobral, known professionally as Nelson Gonçalves, was a Brazilian samba and samba-canção singer and songwriter born on June 21, 1919, in Sant'Ana do Livramento. Raised in São Paulo, he performed as a boxer before beginning his musical career in 1941. He recorded the songs “Se eu pudesse um dia” and “Os anos carregam” for Rádio Record, which led to a contract with RCA Victor. Gonçalves served as a crooner at the Copacabana Casino and performed at Radio City Music Hall in New York. His discography included the albums Na voz de Nelson Gonçalves (1956), Escultura (1958), and Nós (1988). He collaborated with lyricist Adelino Moreira and recorded over 2,000 tracks. By March 1998, he had sold more than 79 million records. Gonçalves died of a heart attack on April 18, 1998, in Rio de Janeiro. In 2019, 35 of his albums were released for streaming.
