Biography

Born in Brazil on October 25, 1937, Roberto Menescal is an acclaimed bossa nova and samba guitarist, composer, and producer. He is acknowledged as a pioneer in bossa nova and has worked with artists such as Sylvia Telles, Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Wanda Sá, and Ale Vanzella. In 1958, he formed one of the first bossa nova groups and performed across the country, helping the bossa nova genre take root in Brazil. As a songwriter, his best-known compositions are “O Barquinho” – recorded by Maysa, Paulinho Nogueira, and Perry Ribeiro - and “Jura de Pombo”, which was covered by Alaíde Costa. As a producer, arranger, and/or sideman, he has worked with Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben Jor, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Jair Rodrigues, Claudette Soares, and others. His recording career as a solo artist and bandleader includes the albums A Bossa Nova (1963), The Boy from Ipanema Beach (1965), Swingueira (1996), Bossa Evergreen (2000), and 80 Anos (2019).
