Biography

Composed of AntÃ´nio Carlos Marques Pinto and JosÃ© Carlos âJocÃ¡fiâ Figueiredo, the duo Antonio Carlos & JocÃ¡fi rose to prominence as a songwriting powerhouse during the late 60s and early 70s. Hailing from Bahia, the pair became acquainted in 1968 and soon made their debut on the fifth edition of the Festival de MÃºsica Popular Brasileira (1969) with Figuereidoâs âCatendÃª,â sung by MarÃa Creuza. Marques Pinto then married Creuza and the three all moved to Rio de Janeiro. The following year, they finished as runner-ups at the sixth edition of the FMPB with âDesacato,â which led to a recording contract with RCA. Mudei de idÃ©ia (1971), their studio debut, was met with great success, largely thanks to the massive hit âVocÃª abusou,â which was later covered by Michel Fugain ("Fais comme l'oiseau"), Celia Cruz, and Stevie Wonder. Subsequently, Marques Pinto and Figuereido went on to score the opening theme for several Brazilian soap operas and achieved second place at the World Popular Song Festival in 1974 with the track âDiacho de dor.â Subsequently, they remained active throughout the 80s and 90s with the LPs PÃ¡ssaro fugido (1984), FeitiÃ§o moleque (1986), and Samba, prazer e mistÃ©rio (1994), and kept touring throughout their native Brazil well into the 2010s.
