Biography

The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, founded in 1948 by Ruth Railton, is a prominent youth orchestra consisting of members aged 13 to 19. The NYO holds annual auditions across the UK, requiring a minimum standard of ABRSM/Trinity Guildhall/London College of Music Grade 8 Distinction. The orchestra assembles thrice-yearly for residential courses, performing works by Romantic, 20th-century, and contemporary composers. Notable performances include appearances at the BBC Proms and venues such as Barbican Hall and Royal Festival Hall. In 2011, the NYO was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society's Best Ensemble Award, received the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2012, and won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble award in 2015. The orchestra has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop, and Sir Simon Rattle.
