Biography

Born in 1955 in Cheshire, England, Douglas Bostock is a British conductor renowned for the diversity of his repertoire and his commitment to the rediscovery of little-known composers. Trained at London's Royal College of Music, he studied conducting with such masters as Sir Adrian Boult and Norman Del Mar. After starting his career in the UK, he quickly established himself on the international scene, working with orchestras in Europe, Japan and the USA. From 1991 to 1998, he was Principal Conductor of the Tokyo Chamber Orchestra, with whom he helped expand the musical dialogue between Europe and Japan. He went on to conduct several ensembles in Germany, including the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie (1999-2009) and the Munich Symphony Orchestra (2016-2019), while maintaining regular collaborations with numerous European ensembles. A very active recording artist, Bostock has recorded for labels such as Classico, Kosei, Alto, Coviello Classics and CPO, distinguishing himself with cycles devoted to rarely-performed composers, including Josef Rheinberger, Ulrik Sprang-Hanssen, Petr Zdvihal, Josef Krecmer, Morten Zeuthen, Vitezslav Novak, Zdenek Fibich and Carl Nielsen, several volumes of whose works he engraves, or British symphonists of the XXᵉ century such as Arthur Butterworth, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frederic Austin, A. C. McKenzie, C. Villiers Stanford, Edward Gregson, Alun Hoddinott or Malcolm Arnold. He also records with other orchestras such as the Carlsbad Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic of Bohemia, the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1997, he recorded the three volumes of the French Orchestral Miniatures 1850-1950 series. In parallel with his conducting activities, he is also involved in pedagogy, giving masterclasses and teaching conducting, notably in Germany and Japan. His career bears witness to a constant musical curiosity and a concern for transmission, combining symphonic tradition, discovery and modernity. Since 2019, Bostock has been artistic director and principal conductor of the Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, with whom he began the Music for Strings recording series in 2020, featuring composers such as Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry, Gordon Jacob, Granville Bantock, Christopher Wilson, Ethel Smyth, Constance Warren, Ruth Gripps and Susan Spain-Dunk.
