Monika Roscher is a German jazz and independent guitarist, composer, and singer who was born in 1984 in Langenzenn. She studied jazz guitar and composition at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts and founded the Monika Roscher Bigband in 2012 as part of her thesis. The ensemble achieved national recognition for a musical style that blends big band brass with elements of rock, pop, electro, and cinematic soundscapes. Their debut studio album, Failure in Wonderland, was released (2012) through the label Enja Records and earned Roscher the ECHO Jazz award for Newcomer of the Year. The group has performed at major international events, including Jazzfest Berlin and the Fusion Festival, and conducted a concert tour to Istanbul in 2016 following the release of their second album, Of Monsters and Birds (2016). Roscher has also composed extensive scores for theater productions directed by Ulrich Rasche, including Woyzeck (2017) and Das groÃe Heft (2018). Her third studio album, Witchy Activities and the Maple Death, was released (2023) through her own label, Zenna Records, and received the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In 2024, her composition â8 Prinzessinnenâ (2023) won the German Jazz Prize for Composition/Arrangement of the Year. Her later recordings include the live album Witchy Activities â Live (2025).
