Biography
Joseph Tawadros, born October 6, 1983, in Cairo, Egypt, is an oud player and multi-instrumentalist who emigrated to Australia at three. Initially drawn to the trumpet, he switched to the oud at eight after seeing a movie about Sayed Darwish and completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of New South Wales. Tawadros' debut album Storyteller was released in 2004, followed by Visions in 2005 and Epiphany in 2007. He won his first ARIA Award for Best World Music Album in 2012 for Concerto of the Greater Sea, and has since won the award six more times through 2023. His eclectic style blends Middle Eastern music with classical and jazz elements, and he has collaborated with notable musicians such as John Abercrombie and Bela Fleck. Tawadros was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016.
