Biography

Mingus Dynasty, an American jazz ensemble formed in 1979, was named after Charles Mingus' 1959 album Mingus Dynasty, and featured many musicians who had recorded or played with Mingus. Notable alumni include Jimmy Owens, Randy Brecker, and Richard Williams. In 1980, they released their debut album Chair in the Sky, followed by Live at Montreux (1981) and Reincarnation (1982). The ensemble expanded to a big band format in 1988, leading to the release of albums like Mingus' Sounds of Love (1988). In 1991, the Mingus Big Band held weekly residencies in New York City and toured extensively worldwide, rotating Monday nights at DROM in New York. Subsequent releases include The Next Generation (1991) and I am Three (2005).
