Michael Wayne Carvin, born on December 12, 1944, in Houston, Texas, is an American jazz drummer. He began his musical training at age six under the guidance of his father, a prominent drummer in Houston. By age twelve, Carvin played professionally and won the first of five consecutive Texas rudimental championships. He worked with Motown Records and contributed to studio and television projects on the West Coast. In 1973, he joined Freddie Hubbard's band and moved to New York City. Notable collaborations include work with Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, and McCoy Tyner. Carvin recorded over 250 albums, including The Camel (1975) and Marsalis Music Honors Michael Carvin (2006). Other notable albums include First Time (1988) and Flash Forward (2014).
