Biography
Born in Annapolis, Maryland, on October 28, 1995, McKinley Dixon grew up in the Jamaica neighborhood of New York, before moving to Chicago. After studying at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, he turned to rap under the influence of soul, gospel and jazz, which informs his arrangements. He released the self-produced albums Who Taught to Hate Yourself (2016) and The Importance of Self Belief (2018) to critical acclaim, which highlighted his literary influences, poetic style and engaged themes, in addition to the musical richness of the tracks. In 2021, Dixon continues with For My Mama and Anyone Who Looks Like Her, followed by Beloved! Paradise! Jazz! (2023), named after Toni Morrison's novel of the same name, a major influence on his literary inspiration. This fourth opus, once again acclaimed by the specialist press, precedes Magic, Alive! (2025), a concept album featuring Quelle Chris, Anjimile, Pink Siifu and Shamir.
