Biography

The McGee Brothers were an American old-time performing duo of brothers. Sam (Samuel Fleming McGee) and Kirk (David Kirkland McGee), were born in Franklin, Tennessee. Sam played guitar and Kirk played banjo or fiddle, although they were both proficient in multiple string instruments. They began performing together in the mid-1920s, making their initial appearance on the WSM Barn Dance, which later became the Grand Ole Opry. In 1927, they joined Uncle Dave Macon's band, the Fruit Jar Drinkers. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the McGee Brothers performed with various notable acts, including Arthur Smith and Bill Monroe and His Bluegrass Boys. They released Milk 'em In The Evening Blues: Old Timers Of The Grand Ole Opry in 1968. During the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, they experienced a resurgence in popularity. Sam McGee died on August 28, 1975, following a tractor accident. Kirk continued performing until his death on October 24, 1983.
