Biography
Max Edward Morath, born on October 1, 1926, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was an American pianist known for his contributions to ragtime music. He began studying piano and harmony as a child under the guidance of his mother, who played for silent films. Morath's early career involved jobs in radio and television, jazz, and theater. His interest in early American popular music led him to create The Ragtime Era, a series of 26 half-hour television programs for PBS from 1959 to 1961, which brought him national recognition. Morath released several albums, including That Celebrated Maestro (1963) and Oh Play That Thing! The Ragtime Era (1964), showcasing his skills as a ragtime pianist. He also authored The NPR Curious Listener's Guide to Popular Standards (2002). Morath continued touring until 2007, earning the nickname "Mr. Ragtime" for his significant contributions to the genre. He passed away on June 19, 2023.
