Biography

Max Goberman, born on February 8, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American conductor who studied violin and conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music. He started as a violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra before becoming a conductor. In the 1940s and 1950s, Goberman conducted several Broadway productions, including On the Town (1944) by Leonard Bernstein and West Side Story (1957), for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He also orchestrated and conducted The Beggar's Opera. In his later years, Goberman began recording all of Joseph Haydn's symphonies with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, completing 40 or 45 before his death on December 31, 1962. Some recordings were released posthumously by CBS's Odyssey label. Goberman also recorded works by Antonio Vivaldi, Arcangelo Corelli, and William Boyce.
