Maury Alan Yeston, born October 23, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S., is an American composer, lyricist, and music theorist. His early musical training began at age five with piano lessons from his mother, leading to a composition award by age seven. Yeston's interest in musical theatre was sparked at age ten when he saw My Fair Lady on Broadway. Yeston's breakthrough came with the Broadway musical Nine, for which he won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Score in 1982. He followed this success with Titanic in 1997, earning another Tony Award for Best Score. His other notable works included Grand Hotel (1989), Phantom (1991), and Death Takes a Holiday (2011). Yeston won two Drama Desk Awards, an Olivier Award, and was inducted into The American Theater Hall of Fame in 2023.
