Biography

Mattiel's self-titled debut album was released in 2017, featuring a retro-leaning rock & roll sound inspired by the 1960s music that had previously filled Mattiel Brown's childhood home. Raised on a farm in Brooks, Georgia, Brown grew up listening to her parents' record collection, including classic releases by the Rolling Stones, the Monkees, Cher, and the Blue Magoos. She later moved to Atlanta, where she worked as a graphic designer while collaborating with local producers Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley. The three musicians created Mattiel together, co-writing the songs before recording the album over a period of nine months. Released by Burger Records in America and Heavenly Records in Europe, the album became a critical success, receiving international praise for its modern interpretation of vintage influences. After releasing a follow-up EP, Customer Copy, in December 2018, Mattiel signed with ATO Records and recorded a second album, Satis Factory, which appeared in 2019. Like its predecessor, Satis Factory saluted the old-school sounds of classic R&B, mid-century pop, and garage rock, while also expanding Mattiel's palette to include rockabilly, punk, and country. The following year, Mattiel released a 7-inch vinyl single that featured covers of the Beastie Boys' "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" and The Clash's "Guns Of Brixton."
