Biography

The War On Drugs formed in 2005 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, combining the heartland hooks of Tom Petty with the sweeping, atmospheric guitar heroics of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. This layered rock & roll sound was originally the brainchild of guitarist Adam Granduciel and multi-instrumentalist Kurt Vile. After the release of the band's debut album, Wagonweel Blues, in 2008, Kurt Vile left the band in order to focus on his solo career, with 2011's Slave Ambient marking the start of Adam Granduciel's time as The War on Drugs' main songwriter and chief visionary. 2014's Lost in the Dream established the band's reputation as one of America's premier rock acts, peaking at Number 26 on the Billboard 200 while cracking the Top 20 in the UK. A Deeper Understanding was released through Atlantic Records in August 2017 and became a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the dreamy single "Pain" climbed to Number 1 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart in the US. Four years later, The War On Drugs topped that chart once again with "I Don't Live Here Anymore," the title track from the band's fifth studio release. A Top 10 hit in the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Denmark, I Don't Live Here Anymore charted at Number 22 in the US. In September 2024, they collected live recordings from their 2022 and 2023 tours for their second live album, Live Drugs Again.
