Biography

Armed with a banjo, a guitar and a stash of electronic beats, South African folktronica innovator Matthew Mole adds brushstrokes of pop-minded electronica to his festival-ready folk. Born on October 28, 1991 in Cape Town, South Africa, the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter made his debut in 2011 with the You Did Well, Kid EP, which he followed with the Same Parts, Same Heart EP in 2012. 2013 saw the release of Mole's debut album, The Home We Built, on which he played the ukulele, banjo, organ, piano, guitars, drums and various percussion instruments. Mole's second album Run arrived in 2016 and he ushered in his third album, Ghost, in 2020. That same year, Mole picked up his sixth nomination at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) for Best Pop Album. He had previously received three nominations for his debut album in 2014; Male Artist of The Year, Best Pop Album and Best Engineer of The Year (Matthew Fink). Mole's album Run was also nominated for a SAMA in 2017, under the categories Best Pop and Best Produced album. Mole released a trio of EPs in 2020; Keep It Together, Honey, I'm Home and Fall. He also released a pair of singles that year; "Pennsylvania" and a cover of "Silent Night".
