Biography
Best known as the co-creator and co-star of era-defining, albeit contentious situation comedies like Little Britain and Come Fly with Me, British actor Matt Lucas (born March 5th, 1974 in Paddington, London) has always had a well-documented affinity for music, although had not recorded any original material prior to 2020. Between novelty cameos in music videos by Britpop icons Blur, electronic duo The Pet Shop Boys and comedy group Fat Les in the â90s and â00s, he got his first taste of singing live after landing a prominent role in Boy Georgeâs 2002 musical Taboo, in which he played performance artist Leigh Bowery. From 1995 to 2009, he also warmed up his vocal cords while playing the role of scorekeeper George Dawes on the comedy show Shooting Stars, delivering live renditions of a number of humorous original songs over the course of his time on the series. In 2020, in a bid to support frontline healthcare workers amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Lucas unexpectedly revisited one such track, the âBaked Potato Songâ, penning a virus-themed new version entitled âThank You, Baked Potatoâ. All proceeds went to FeedNHS, a new charity established by Lucas himself alongside fast food giants LEON and actors Damien Lewis and Helen McCrory, funding the delivery of hot meals to busy hospital staff. The single peaked at #34 on the UK Singles Chart, later inspiring a childrenâs book and a festive sequel entitled âMerry Christmas, Baked Potatoâ, which failed to chart but nonetheless received national attention thanks to Lucasâs stacked itinerary of television interviews.
