Biography

Bob & Doug McKenzie are a pair of fictional characters created and played by Canadian comedians Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as part of the cult comedy sketch show SCTV. The hosts of a made-up show called The Great White North, brothers Bob & Doug McKenzie utilized the most common Canadian stereotypes to great comedic effect, achieving great popularity in both Canada and the US. The success of the sketch led the duo to record a McKenzie Brothers album, 1982’s Grammy-nominated The Great White North, which included a cameo by Rush’s Geddy Lee on the track “Take Off.” Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas tried to seize the momentum in 1984 with the feature film Strange Brew, an absurdist retelling of the Hamlet story set inside a Canadian brewery that was considered a commercial flop at the time but eventually became a cult favorite. After the duo’s dissolution, Rick Moranis landed starring roles in movies such as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Dave Thomas appeared on the sitcom Grace Under Fire. They would reunite once again for a beer TV ad in 1997.
