Matt Hammitt was born Matthew Daniel Hammitt on October 19, 1979, in Toledo, Ohio. He began performing as a teenager and co-founded the Christian rock band Sanctus Real in 1996, serving as lead vocalist and a principal songwriter through the groupâs breakthrough years. With Matt Hammitt out front, Sanctus Real released albums including Say It Loud (2002), Fight the Tide (2004), The Face of Love (2006), We Need Each Other (2008), and Pieces of a Real Heart (2010), while songs such as âEverything About You,â âIâm Not Alright,â âForgiven,â and âLead Meâ became key Christian radio hits. His first solo album, Every Falling Tear (2011), was shaped by his familyâs experience after the birth of his son Bowen, who was born with a serious heart condition, and included âAll of Me.â Matt Hammitt left Sanctus Real in 2015 to focus on family and solo work, then released Matt Hammitt (2017) through Full Circle Music and Treetop (2020), a more indie-pop-leaning album. Also in 2020, he published the book Lead Me: Finding Courage to Fight for Your Marriage, Children, and Faith. He later formed the rock project LO CLOUD with Nick de Partee and Jake Rye, releasing âSleepwalkerâ in 2024 and further singles in 2025. Matt Hammitt also returned to solo Christian music with âNo Matter the Cost (Yes)â and âDays God Gaveâ in 2025, the latter reaching number 37 on the Billboard Radio Christian Songs chart in 2026.
