Biography

Born in Lebowakgomo, South Africa, on November 4, 1993, soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha began singing in church, before studying opera singing at the University of Cape Town. Engaged by Cape Town Opera for two years in its young artists program, she won over audiences in The Magic Flute and Porgy and Bess, and continued her training at Tshwane University of Technology. She wins several competition prizes, including the Audience Prize at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in 2019 and the Song Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 2021. Appearing on stage at the BBC Proms in 2022, the soprano performed Verdi's Requiem, followed by a series of operatic and concert appearances in a wide range of roles and works, including lieder and mélodie. In 2024, she won the Herbert von Karajan Prize and recorded her first Masabane Cecilia recital for the Rubicon label. Ranking 47th in the British classical charts, it includes works by Richard Strauss, Gershwin, Poulenc, Berlioz and Catalani, alongside songs from the popular and gospel repertoires.
