Biography

American soprano born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, on February 14, 1959, Renée Fleming made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1986. Following resounding successes at La Scala in Milan and in The Master Singers of Nuremberg at the Bayreuth Festival, the singer is in demand in opera houses the world over. Her discography includes dozens of recordings in registers ranging from Mozart to Benjamin Britten. In addition to the success of Strauss Heroines (1999) and Homage: The Age of the Diva (2006), Renée Fleming also tried her hand at jazz and pop/rock with Dark Hope in 2010. She has received five Grammy Awards and the Polar Prize in 2008. Honored by President Barack Obama with the Medal of Arts, the soprano revealed her "Guilty Pleasures" from song and opera in October 2013. At the end of 2014, her first collection of Christmas songs, Christmas in New York, was released, featuring a host of guests. She then collaborated with the Emerson String Quartet on the Berg - Wellesz program (2015), then performed melodies by Barber, Hillborg and Björk on Distant Light (2017). The same year, Renée Fleming sang in Le Chevalier à la rose at New York's Metropolitan Opera, then moved into musical comedy with her role in Carousel, followed by the collection of famous Broadway arias (2018). After the success of the compilation Her Greatest Moments at the MET in 2023, she collaborated with bluegrass banjoist Béla Fleck on the album The Fiddle and the Drum (2026), featuring guests Dolly Parton, Jerry Douglas, Vince Gill, Aoife O'Donovan, Sierra Hull and Sarah Jarosz.
