Roberta Alexander, born March 3, 1949, in Lynchburg, Virginia, was an American operatic soprano. She studied music at Central State University and the University of Michigan before moving to the Netherlands to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Alexander made her debut at the Dutch National Opera in 1975 as Fanny in La cambiale di matrimonio. She gained international recognition for her performances of Mozart heroines, including roles such as Countess Almaviva and Donna Elvira. From 1983 to 1991, she was a leading soprano at the Metropolitan Opera, where she performed principal roles like Mimì in La bohème (Puccini) and the title role in Jenůfa (JanáÄek). Alexander's discography includes notable albums such as Richard Strauss Lieder, Op. 10, 22, 27, 29, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Songs for soprano and fortepiano, and Giacomo Puccini, Songs & Other Rare Pieces. She taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Rotterdam Conservatory and the opera studio of the Dutch National Opera. Alexander was married twice, with conductor Edo de Waart in the early 1970s and the manager Siebe Riedstra in 1975. She died from a heart attack in Amsterdam on October 14, 2025, at the age of 76.
