Biography

Martha Redbone, born in 1966 in New York City, New York, is an American singer and songwriter known for blending rhythm and blues and soul with elements of Native American music. Her stage name, Redbone, came from Southern slang for people of Black and Native American ancestry. She was mentored by Junie Morrison of the Ohio Players and Parliament Funkadelic. In 2001, she released her debut album Home of the Brave. Redbone's album Skintalk (2004) won the 6th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best R&B Album in 2007. She composed the music score for Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf with her husband Aaron Whitby, which premiered on Broadway in 2022 and won a Drama Desk award for Outstanding Music in a Play in 2020. Other album releases included Future Street (2006) and The Garden of Love – Songs of William Blake (2012).
