Biography

Markos Vamvakaris, born Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης in 1905 in Ano Syros, Greece, was a singer and bouzouki player. He fled to Piraeus at twelve, working odd jobs before learning the bouzouki and performing in hashish-smoking establishments. His breakthrough came in 1932 with recordings "Efoumernam' ena vrady" and "Taxim Serf". Vamvakaris collaborated with musicians like Giorgos Batis, performing in clubs. Notable songs include "Frankosyriani". Post-World War II, he faced health issues and declining popularity until the 1960s revival by artists like Grigoris Bithikotsis. He died in 1972. His compositions, known for minimal orchestration and simple lyrics, significantly influenced Greek music.
