Biography

MartânÃ¡lia MendonÃ§a Ferreira, known simply as MartânÃ¡lia, was born on September 7, 1965, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is a singer, songwriter, percussionist, and actress. As the daughter of legendary sambista Martinho da Vila and singer AnÃ¡lia MendonÃ§a, MartânÃ¡lia was immersed in music from an early age. MartânÃ¡lia began her professional career at 16, providing backing vocals for her father alongside her sister, Analimar. In the mid-1990s, she started performing in bars, nightclubs, and theaters in Rio de Janeiro, leading to the release of her samba album Minha Cara in 1997. She also joined the group BatacotÃ´, which included percussionist Ivan Lins. With support from her father, MartânÃ¡lia received backing from notable Brazilian musicians: Caetano Veloso was the artistic director of her album PÃ© de Meu Samba (2002) and composed its title track, while Maria BethÃ¢nia produced Menino do Rio (2006). MartânÃ¡lia's career highlights include several Grammy nominations. Her album Em Samba! Ao Vivo (2014) was nominated for Best Samba/Pagode Album at the 16th Latin Grammy Awards in 2015. In 2017, she won the award in the same category with her album Misturado (2016). In 2019, she received another nomination for her album MartânÃ¡lia Canta Vinicius de Moraes, a tribute to the legendary carioca poet. She followed this success with Sou Assim AtÃ© Mudar, released via Biscoito Fino in 2021.
