Biography
Born in Dolbeau-Mistassini, Quebec, on February 1, 1964, Mario Pelchat is a Canadian songwriter whose popular interpretation of French pop music has earned multiple Félix Awards. He began performing as a child in 1973, often alongside his older sister, Johanne. The pair remained active for six years, but Joanne became sick as a teenager and passed away on December 18, 1979. Pelchat took a hiatus before releasing his platinum-certified debut album as a solo artist, Je suis un chanteur, in 1982. 1988's Mario Pelchat and Couleur passion both went gold, while 1993's Pelchat â an album that featured a duet with Celine Dion â went double-platinum. The record was named "Album of the Year" at the Félix Awards in 1992, two years after Pelchat was named "Male Singer of The Year" at the same ceremony. Mario Pelchat remained commercially viable for decades, earning gold records with records like 1995's C'est la vie, 1999's VII, 2006's Le monde où je vais, 2010's Toujours de nous, and 2017's Agnus Dei. Both Angus Dei and its follow-up, Les Prêtres, were collaborations with Noel Ensemble, and they each charted within the Top 5 in Canada. He remained a Top 40 artist with 2019's Pelchat Aznavour désormais, which hit Number 22, and 2021's Comme au premier rendez-vous, which reached Number 27.
