Biography

Born on January 23rd, 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the son of chart-topping recording artist Phyllis Nelson, singer-songwriter Marc Nelson first cut his teeth in the music game as a student at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, where he formed the internationally renowned R&B outfit Boyz II Men. However, growing tired of the tedious bureaucratic delays to their debut, he parted ways with the group prior to their global breakthrough, instead setting sights on a solo career. Sure enough, he soon inked a major-label deal of his own with Capitol Records, debuting with the charting Marvin Gaye cover “I Want You” before going on to release a 1991 album of the same name. After penning lyrics for a whole host of his contemporaries including Brandy and Tyrese, Nelson joined another local R&B group, the LaFace Records-signed Az Yet, as their second lead singer ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album. The LP arrived in 1996, earning platinum certification and producing two top ten singles in the US in the form of “Last Night” and “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”. Breaking from the band, Nelson returned in 1999 with his second solo album, Chocolate Mood, which yielded the US #29 hit “15 Minutes”. The same year, he teamed up with superstar Beyoncé on a well-received duet “After All is Said and Done”, recorded for the film The Best Man. After a lengthy period of inactivity, Nelson returned in 2007 with his third album, the self-produced Marc: My Words, while also embarking on a side project as a member of the supergroup Blayse alongside singers from Blackstreet, Silk and Az Yet. The quartet ultimately never shared any material, and Nelson subsequently rejoined Az Yet. He reemerged as a soloist in 2016 with the Emmy Award-nominated “Snowy Day”, written for the Christmas film of the same name, going on to share two new singles – “Wishing You the Worst” and “Sack Full of Dreams” – in 2017 and 2020 respectively.
