Formed in Norwich in 2012, British jazz trio Mammal Hands brings together brothers Nick Smart (keyboards) and Jordan Smart (saxophone) and Jesse Barrett (drums, percussion, tabla). The trio evolves in a contemporary style influenced by modal jazz and ambient, alongside the Sunda Arc electronic project developed by the Smart brothers in 2020. Signed to Matthew Halsall's Mancunian label Gondwana Records, Mammal Hands recorded the albums Animalia (2014), Floa (2016) and Shadow Work (2017), followed by the three-track EP Becoming (2018). Acclaimed by an international audience, the band performs between Europe, America and Asia, including prestigious venues such as London's Barbican Centre and Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie. Two further albums followed, Captured Spirits (2020) and Gift from the Trees (2023), before Mammal Hands signed to German label ACT, a flagship of contemporary jazz. With former GoGo Penguin drummer Rob Turner replacing Jesse Barrett, the band records the album Circadia (2026).
