Biography

Hailing from Manchester, GoGo Penguin brought together Chris Illingworth (piano), Nick Blacka (double bass) and Rob Turner (drums) in 2009. Although influenced by ambient sounds, drum & bass rhythms and post-rock, the trio's eclectic music is organic and draws inspiration from contemporary minimalism, jazz fusion and popular music. After two albums released by Gondwana Records, Fanfares (2012) and V2.0 (2014, nominated for the Mercury Prize), GoGo Penguin moved to the Blue Note label to record their acclaimed collection, Man Made Object (2016), which reached number 72 in the UK charts. A concert at London's Abbey Road Studios leads to the release of the Live at Abbey Road EP in 2016. The trio then work on the material for a fifth album, as original as ever, A Humdrum Star, which sees the light of day in February 2018 and reaches No. 1 in the British jazz and blues charts. The influence of minimalist music, one of the trio's major components, is still prominent on an untitled sixth album released in June 2020 and followed by its remixed complement, GGP/RMX (2021). Former member of Kairos 4tet, drummer Jon Scott replaces Rob Turner in 2021 and takes part in the recording of the Between Two Waves EP (2022), released on XXIM Records, as well as the album Everything Is Going to Be OK (2023) and its successor Necessary Fictions (2025), with contributions from the Manchester Collective orchestra, Daudi Matsiko and violinist Rakhi Singh.
