The Christian artist known as Mac Powell was born Johnny Mac Powell on December 25, 1972. Hailing from Clanton, Alabama, he moved to Georgia during his teenage years and formed the band Nuclear Hoedown with guitarist Mark Lee while still in high school. Subsequently, Powell and Lee went on to form the award-winning Christian rock band Third Day, with whom he released over a dozen albums before the groupâs disbandment in 2018. Apart from his career with Third Day, Mac Powell has enjoyed great popularity as a solo artist, making his official debut in 2012 with an eponymous studio album. His first full-length entered Billboardâs Top Heatseekers chart at Number 31 and paved the way for a series of releases that would establish him as one of the most promising stars in the worship music sceneâSouthpaw (2014), Mac Powell and the Family Reunion (2018), and December (2018), followed by Mac Powell and the Family Reunion: Back Again in 2019. In 2021, he dropped the single âRiver of Life,â an uplifting country-pop tune that reached Number 20 on Billboardâs Hot Christian Songs chart. The album New Creation, released later that year, delivered further hits with the title track (Number 9 on the Christian Songs chart) and "1991". In 2023, Mac Powell covered the Christmas favorite "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", before the release of the album I Love Jesus (2024), represented by its title track.
