Biography

Luther Henderson was an American composer, arranger, and pianist born on 14 March 1919 in Kansas City, Missouri. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942 before serving as an arranger for the United States Navy band during World War War II. He made his Broadway debut as the co-orchestrator for the musical Beggar's Holiday (1946) and later worked on over fifty productions, including Funny Girl (1964) and Ain't Misbehavin' (1978). Henderson received a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score for Jelly's Last Jam (1992) and won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations that same year. He arranged over one hundred pieces for the group Canadian Brass, including the album Take the "A" Train (1999). Henderson died of cancer on 29 July 2003 in New York City. He received a posthumous Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2004.
