Biography

Real name Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on April 15, 1978, singer Luis Fonsi shot to international fame in 2018 with the track "Despacito", sung as a duet with Daddy Yankee, which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and racked up billions of views and listens on dedicated sites. Prior to this, the child of Puerto Rican emigrants who had been living in Florida (USA) since the age of ten, scored a hit with Latin American audiences with the albums Comenzaré (1998), Eterno (2000), Amor Secreto (2002) and Abrazar La Vida (2003), all of which went gold. Alongside his own songs, Luis Fonsi composes custom tracks for artists such as Olga Tañon and Christina Aguilera, and duets with David Bustamante and Emma Bunton (Spice Girls). In 2007, after an attempt at R&B, he teamed up with reggaeton duo Wisin y Yandel for the track "Yo Te Quiero", and three years later took part in the recording of "Somos El Mundo", the Hispanic version of "We Are the World", to benefit the victims of an earthquake in Haiti. After the album 8 (2014), which includes a duet with Juan Luis Guerra, his name appears in the credits of the compilation We Love Disney (2016). The success of "Despacito " (2017) is followed by the compilation Despacito & Mis Grandes Éxitos, including a Justin Bieber remix, a salsa version with Victor Manuelle and the duet "Wave Your Flag" with Afrojack. The same year sees the release of the duet "Echame La Culpa" with Demi Lovato, followed by further performances with Martina Stoessel, Stefflon Don and Ozuna. The album Vida (2019), featuring his latest chart-topping tracks alongside new songs, tops the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and reaches #18 on the Billboard 200. The same year, the Puerto Rican singer is among the performers of "Right Where I'm Supposed to Be" at the 2019 Special Olympics Summer Games ceremony in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and sings at the opening of the Pan-American Games in Lima (Peru). After the 2022 release of Ley de Gravedad (ranked #27 in the Latin charts in the U.S. and #1 in Spain), the itinerant album El Viaje is released in 2024, featuring the singles "Roma" (duet with Laura Pausini), "Buenos Aires" and "Marbella".
