Biography
Loverboy, a Canadian rock band formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1979, consists of lead singer Mike Reno, guitarist Paul Dean, keyboardist Doug Johnson, bassist Scott Smith, and drummer Matt Frenette. The band's name was inspired by a dream that Paul Dean had after spending time with his bandmates and their girlfriends. Loverboy signed with Columbia Records of Canada in 1980 and released their self-titled debut album, which sold over one million records in Canada alone and two million copies in the US. Their debut single "Turn Me Loose" reached number 7 on the Canadian charts and number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1981. The band's follow-up album, Get Lucky, released in October 1981, included hit tracks such as "Working for the Weekend", which became their best-selling album in the U.S., reaching number 7 on the Billboard album charts and selling over four million copies. In 1983, Loverboy released Keep It Up, with the single "Hot Girls in Love" reaching number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The band recorded the theme song for the 1984 Summer Olympics, "Nothing's Gonna Stop You Now". They broke up in 1988 due to internal tensions, but reunited briefly in late 1989 for a tour, continuing to perform live shows regularly after reuniting again in 1991. In 2017 the band returned with new single, "Stop the Rain" followed by "Release" in 2022.
