Biography
Often regarded as pioneers of the cumbia sonidera genre, which combines accordion-driven melodies with a more modern, synth-based sound, Los Ãngeles Azules went on to become one of the biggest names in the Mexican cumbia scene. Strictly a family affair, the group was formed in 1980 by the MejÃa Avante siblings: ElÃas, Alfredo, José Hilario, Jorge, Cristina, and Guadalupe. They got their start playing in weddings, baptisms, and local festivals, and made their official recording debut in 1982 with the album Ritmo... AlegrÃa... Sabor! (Vol. 1). Throughout its lengthy career, the band went through several lineup changes, always led by the MejÃa Avante family. Los Ãngeles Azules hit their stride during the 1990s by releasing a string of classic cumbia albums such as Cómo Te Voy a Olvidar (1996), whose title track entered Billboardâs Hot Latin Songs and Latin Airplay charts, Inolvidables (1996), Confesiones de Amor (1998), and Una Lluvia de Rosas (1999), which contained the award-winning number 1 hit âEl Listón de Tu Pelo.â By the early aughts, Los Ãngeles Azules had attained legendary status, playing in front of packed stadiums throughout the world. In 2016, they released the collaborative album De Plaza en Plaza, featuring Latin pop artists such as Natalia Lafourcade, Miguel Bosé, and Fito Páez. In 2018, a star-studded collection of cover versions saw the light under the title Esto Sà Es Cumbia. That same year, they became the first cumbia group to ever set foot on the stage of the Coachella Festival. This string of high-profile collaborations continued on 2020's De Buenos Aires Para el Mundo, which included appearances by Argentine luminaries Lali, Vicentico, Abel Pintos, and many more. Their single âCumbia a la Gente,â issued in 2021, entered the Top 10 of Mexicoâs Cosmohits chart. Following the release of 2022's Cumbia del Corazón, Los Ãngeles Azules joined forces with Argentine urban artist MarÃa Becerra on the single "El Amor de Mi Vida," reaching number 21 on the Argentine Billboard charts.
