Biography
Born as "Rodolfo Olivares" in Camargo, Mexico, on April 19, 1947, Fito Olivares is a cumbia musician best known for his Lo Nuestro Award-nominated hit single "Juana La Cubana" and his ASCAP Award-winning song "El Colesterol." He was raised alongside his brother Jaime and Javier Olivares in a musical family, and the three siblings relocated to Houston, Texas, in 1977. There, they joined their brother-in-law, Jacinto Treviño, in the group Tam y Tex in 1979. The band renamed itself Fito Olivares y La Pura Sabrosura in 1980, with Olivares serving as the ensemble's saxophonist, songwriter, and de facto leader. Mi Profesión marked Fito Olivares y La Pura Sabrosura's official debut in 1980, with songs like "La Gallina," "Juana la Cubana," and "La Negra Catalina" all becoming hits in the Tejano market during the latter half of the 1980s. Continuing to work as a bandleader and solo artist, Olivares scored nearly a dozen Top 40 hits on the Billboard Latin charts throughout the 1990s, with "Cupido Bandido," "La Ranita," "El Paso del Canguro," "Juana Maria" and "El Colesterol" enjoying the most success. He continued to tour with La Pura Sabrosura well into the 2000s, becoming a cumbia hero and celebrated leader of regional Mexican music along the way.
