Biography

Otis Verries Hicks, known as Lightnin' Slim, and born on March 13, 1913, in Good Pine, Louisiana, was a blues musician. He started playing guitar at a young age and by the late 1940s was performing in bars in Baton Rouge. One of his first recordings, "Bad Luck", was released by Feature Records in 1954 under the stage name Lightnin' Slim. In the mid-1950s, he signed with Excello Records, collaborating frequently with his brother-in-law Slim Harpo and harmonica player Lazy Lester. Notable releases include Rooster Blues (1960) and Bell Ringer (1965). Lightnin' Slim stopped performing for a time but was rediscovered in 1970 by Fred Reif, leading to a new recording contract with Excello. He toured extensively in the 1970s, including performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival and a UK tour in 1973. Lightnin' Slim died of stomach cancer on July 27, 1974, in Detroit, Michigan.
