Biography

Laura Alexandra Barrett (born 1982) is a Canadian indie pop singer-songwriter and musician from Toronto. Educated at the University of Toronto, Barrett is recognized for incorporating the kalimba into her compositions. A classically trained pianist, she began studying the instrument at age eight. Her initial solo performance featured a cover of “Smells Like Nirvana” at a tribute concert. Barrett performed as a member of The Hidden Cameras, Henri Fabergé and the Adorables, and the Weezer tribute band Sheezer. Her discography featured the EP Earth Sciences (2008) and the studio albums Victory Garden (2008) and Who Is the Baker? (2019). In 2008, she received a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award. Barrett composed scores for the films Porch Stories (2015) and Birdland (2018) and collaborated on the National Parks Project (2011). She also worked as a teacher in Toronto.
