Biography

Larry Koonse (born July 7, 1961) was an American modern jazz guitarist from San Diego, California. Koonse began playing guitar at age seven and recorded his debut album, Dave and Larry Koonse – Father and Son Jazz Guitars, with his father Dave Koonse in 1978. He received a Bachelor of Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California in 1984. Koonse performed with John Dankworth and Cleo Laine for six years and collaborated with artists including Tierney Sutton, Hubert Laws, Michael Bublé, and Linda Ronstadt. During the 1990s, he taught at the California Institute of the Arts and co-founded the Jazz Compass label. Koonse co-led the L.A. Jazz Quartet and contributed to the soundtracks of Crazy and Redbelt (2008). His recordings included Dialogues of the Heart (1997), Storybook (2006), and What's in the Box – Larry Koonse Plays the Music of Jimmy Wyble (2007).
