Lake, a German progressive rock group founded in Hamburg in 1973, emerged from the earlier ensemble The Tornados and quickly adopted the name Lake. The bandâs early lineup included guitarist Alex Conti, bassist Martin Tiefensee, keyboardist Detlef Petersen, and vocalist James HopkinsâHarrison, who joined in 1975 and became the groupâs defining voice. Their breakthrough came with the single "Time Bomb" in 1976, which reached Number 83 on the United States charts and established Lake as a touring act in the United States alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young. In 1978, the album Lake II peaked at Number 92 in the United States, while Paradise Island followed in 1979. The early 1980s saw the release of Ouch! (1980), Hot Day (1981), and the live double album Lake Live...On the Run (1982). The band signed with Polydor and issued No Time for Heroes (1984), Voices (1985), and So What (1986) before disbanding in 1986/87. James HopkinsâHarrisonâs death by heroin overdose in 1991 ended the groupâs original era. The band was revived in the early 2000s, producing The Blast of Silence (2005) and Wings of Freedom (2014), which continued Lakeâs legacy in progressive rock.
