Lafayette Gilchrist, born on August 3, 1967, in Washington, D.C., is an American jazz pianist and composer. Raised in a musical environment influenced by soul greats like Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5, Gilchrist began playing the piano while studying economics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He formed his first band, the New Volcanoes, in 1993, initially as a quartet. In 2004, he released his compilation album, The Music According to Lafayette Gilchrist. His band also released the album New Jack in 1994, while Asphalt Revolt and Collagic Dreams were both released in 1999. In 2005, after the release of the band's album Towards The Shining Path, Gilchrist formed a commercial band called Three to build a reputation. Gilchrist's compositions have been featured in HBO series such as The Wire, Treme, and The Deuce. His album Now was released in 2020, showcasing his continued evolution as a composer and pianist.
