Biography

La Dispute, an American post-hardcore band from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was formed in late 2004 by Jordan Dreyer, Brad Vander Lugt, Kevin Whittemore, Derek Sterenberg, and Adam Kool. Initially, Dreyer did not have a background in music but wrote poetry and short fiction. The group began performing in local venues such as houses and the Division Avenue Arts Collective. In 2006, Chad Sterenberg replaced his brother Derek, and the band released their first EP, Vancouver, on Friction Records. La Dispute signed with No Sleep Records in early 2008, releasing their debut album Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair later that year. The album received positive reviews from outlets like Alternative Press and PunkNews. In 2011, they released their second studio album, Wildlife, which featured a collection of stories and poems as lyrics. Their third album, Rooms of the House, was released in March 2014 under their own label Better Living. The band embarked on extensive tours, including performances with Thrice and Gates. In 2019, La Dispute released their fourth album, Panorama, which explored themes of grief and loss. The album was later remixed and re-released in December 2019. They returned to the studio in order to recording the fifth full-length, No One Was Driving the Car, issued in September 2025.
