Vocalist and guitarist Jesse Lacey formed Brand New band in 2000 with Vincent Accardi, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane, and released debut studio LP Your Favorite Weapon in 2001, which included the single "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" that gained early radio play. The album reached the Billboard 200 in 2001. The second album, Deja Entendu, issued in 2003, produced the single "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and peaked at number thirty on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 2006 the album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me debuted at number eleven on the Billboard 200 and featured the track "Jesus Christ". The 2009 album Daisy entered the Billboard 200 at number three, with the single "At the Bottom" receiving critical attention. After a prolonged hiatus, the band released Science Fiction in 2017, which reached number one on the Billboard 200, and subsequently disbanded following a 2018 tour; the group reunited for charity and touring appearances in 2024 and 2025.
