Ken Vandermark, born September 22, 1964, in Massachusetts, is an American composer and reedist. He graduated from Natick High School and McGill University with a degree in English. Vandermark's early career included leading jazz groups such as the Fourth Stream in Montreal and Lombard Street in Boston. His breakthrough came in the mid-1990s when he moved to Chicago and joined the NRG Ensemble, gaining widespread attention. Notable albums from this period include Standards (1995) and Utility Hitter (1996). Vandermark's compositions often balance intricate orchestration with passionate improvisation, as heard on releases like Hidden in the Stomach (1997) and Stumble (1998). He has collaborated extensively with musicians such as Hamid Drake, Paul Lytton, and Peter Brötzmann. Vandermark was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1999. His later works include Furniture Music (2003), his first solo album, and Resistance (2015).
