Biography
Georg Gräwe, born on June 28, 1956 in Bochum, Germany, is a German pianist and composer known for his work in modern creative jazz and new improvisation. He began his musical career as a guitarist in a rock group in 1971 before transitioning to piano and forming his first quintet in 1974. In 1981, Gräwe founded the Grubenklangorchester, blending composed parts with free improvisation. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable artists such as Anthony Braxton, John Tchicai, and Evan Parker. He also formed several ensembles, including a trio with Ernst Reijseger and Gerry Hemingway, known as the View from Points West. Gräwe's compositions have been performed worldwide. In 1993, he established the label Random Acoustics. He received the SWR Jazz Prize in 2015 for his contributions to jazz in Germany.
