Biography

A violinist by training, Jean-Paul Céléa (b. 1951) turned to double bass, joining the Ensemble Intercontemporain, directed by Pierre Boulez, in 1973. His virtuosity, which enabled him to take part in jazz and contemporary projects, made him one of France's leading specialists on the instrument. His meeting with François Couturier in Jacques Thollot's quintet led to a close collaboration, resulting in the albums Couturier-Céléa (1978), The Game (1983) and Passagio (1990). In addition to numerous sessions, the musician is involved in INA-GRM projects, teaches at conservatories in Lyon and Paris, and plays in trio with Dave Liebman and Wolfgang Reisinger, whom he reunites on Poison (2007) with Joachim Kühn and Yes Ornette! (2012) with Émile Parisien.
