Biography

Mazz was an American Tejano band formed by Joe López and Jimmy González in 1978 in Brownsville, Texas. Both born in 1950, they started their musical journey together before forming Mazz. The group gained recognition for blending cumbia and rancheras, signing their first major recording contract with EMI Latin in 1989. Their breakthrough came with the single “Laura Ya No Vive Aquí” which topped Billboard's Latin music charts in 1987. Mazz released several albums including Una Noche Juntos: Live (1991) and Lo Haré Por Ti (1992), earning multiple Tejano Music Awards. The band disbanded in 1998 following the departure of López and González who pursued solo careers. González formed Jimmy González y Grupo Mazz, winning multiple Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album between 2001 and 2009. González passed away in 2018.
