Biography

Kandiah Kamalesvaran, known professionally as Kamahl, is an Australian singer and entertainer of Ceylonese Tamil descent. He was born in 1934 in Kuala Lumpur, Federated Malay States. Kamahl's early interest in singing led him to win the state final of the television talent program Australia's Amateur Hour, launching his entertainment career. He enrolled in architecture studies at the University of Adelaide but dropped out to become a full-time entertainer. His first album, A Voice to Remember, was released in 1967. Kamahl achieved significant chart success with singles like âSounds of Goodbyeâ (1969), which peaked at Number 19 on the Kent Music Report singles chart, and âThe Elephant Songâ (1975), which peaked at Number 1 in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Throughout his career, he has recorded over 30 albums. Kamahl has performed at prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera House, London Palladium, and Carnegie Hall, and has sold over 20 million records worldwide.
