Biography
K3 is a Belgian-Dutch girl group whose effervescent teen pop has been consistently dominating the Flemish charts for over a decade. Taking its name from the initials of its original members (Karen Damen, Kristel Verbeke, and Kathleen Aerts) the group has gone through several lineup changes since its inception in the late 90s. Inspired by the success of the English all-female group Spice Girls, singer Niels William created the group in 1998. Only a year after its formation, the trio competed to represent Belgium at the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest with the single âHeyah Mamaâ which, despite being heavily criticized by the judges, reached Number 2 on the Belgian charts and became their first big hit. The track was included in their studio debut Parels (1999), which also peaked at Number 2 on the Ultratop Albums Chart. K3 delivered two more albums for BMG Entertainment (2000âs Alle Kleuren and 2001âs Tele-Romeo) and then signed with Studio 100, this time veering towards a more children-oriented direction. Between 2001 and 2006, the group landed five albums at the top of the Flemish chartsâVerliefd (2002), Oya Lélé (2003), De Wereld Rond (2004), Kuma Hé (2005), and Ya Ya Yippee (2006)âand starred in their own childrenâs TV show De Wereld Van K3. In 2009, Kathleen Aerts quit the group and was replaced by Josje Huisman, who made her debut on the chart-topping album MaMaSé! Over the course of the next few years, K3 continued their winning streak with albums such as Eyo! (2011), 10.000 Luchtballonnen (2015), and Ushuaia (2016), all of which achieved pole position in Belgium. Preceded by its infectious title track, which reached Number 2 on the Flemish Singles Chart, their twentieth album Waterval saw the light in 2021.
